A microcentrifuge tube (commonly called "eppendorf", in reference to the largest manufacturer of these tubes) is a small cylindrical plastic container, with a conical bottom and typically a lid attached to the body of the tube to prevent it from coming off. They are used profusely in molecular biology and biochemistry not only for centrifugation, but, given their low cost, are often used as simple chemical container vials.
